Dubbing is a process where audio and video content is translated from one language into another language while still maintaining the same context. There has to be a language pair in order for dubbing to take place. There is usually a source language which is the original language that content is, while the target language which is the language the content is being translated into. The same applies to voice translation. These both deal only with language pairs. There are very many professionals’ cases where dubbing comes in play and can be used. If you are one of those people who think dubbing is only used in film production, then this article will change your mind. Dubbing is vast and applies in very many professional industries. A lot of translators, myself included, knowing how challenging and harsh the translation job gets and how much we have to deal with before we can fully translate a film and still end up with the original context and original meaning. Being able to consider cultural and linguistical factors is where it gets hard, but we always have to make it work. It is very easy for a film to lose its original meaning and context when certain factors are not taken into consideration. When done well, film translation has the potential to attract the attention of critics and film technicians all over the world; but when poorly executed, film translation can make a comedy out of a serious drama. A single mistake or mistranslation might end up distorting the original message that the film was intended for. With that mentioned, we will look at some main aspects that make translation such a hard task and why they do this. I sure have faced some of these challenges, and I believe other translators have too. Before we get into the challenging aspects of film translation, I will introduce to you the two main processes in film translation so you can have a general understanding of what I am talking about before we get on with the matter at hand. There are two main known forms of film translation in the world today, and that is Dubbing and Subtitling. These two processes involve localization of films into local languages to expand the audience reach of different film works. The difference between the two is that one specializes in an audio format and the other specializes in a text format. Dubbing is the film process that deals with translation of the audio into different languages to localize to meet the expectations of a specific target market while subtitling is the film process that deals with creating translated texts at the bottom of a film screen to serve the same purpose as the dubbing process. Both processes have their challenges and benefits as they are, but in this article, we will look at general aspects that make it hard to work on these processes to perfection. By perfection I mean, being able to work on them and make sure that the finished product mirrors the sentiments and meanings of the original film. Have you ever wondered what translators do when faced with hurdles during their translation works? Has it ever occurred to you that translators have strategies they use or use if ever they face any difficulties in their line of work? These are questions that you might not have thought of because you couldn’t care less about what the process of translation entails. I am 100% sure there is a person out there who doesn’t sleep at night because they are “steadily” thinking about this. In this article, we will look at some techniques that have been availed for translators to use when working with different languages. Ask any translators what some of these techniques are and they won’t know what to tell you, but do they use them? Yes. They use them because their line of work demands, but they might not even know that these techniques have an origin and a name, and that’s what we will outline here today. A client will scout for a translator, find them, make an offer to them and eventually end up giving them some documents to translate, it takes a very well knowledgeable and professional translator to know what to do when they come across difficulties because chances are; the client came to you because they needed your help, and they knew you would help them out. If you end up not knowing how to solve some challenges you face, then you will end up disappointing your client. Therefore, translators need to empower themselves with this knowledge as they grow their craft. What Is Translation? Translation is the process in which we develop new language scripts from existing scripts in a different language. The scripts usually have to follow a specific structure in line with translation rules and regulations to ensure that they are accurate and meaningful. 4 Facts about Translation That Every Translator Will Love A lot of translation service providers have been cropping up in recent years which proves that translation services are a very important part of our economy and these are services that people are looking for, big cooperate companies are outsourcing and so on and so forth. With the internet making the world a global village and there being food and political crisis around the world countries are now communicating with each other more and documents of all kinds from, legal to religious, to health are being translated to serve different purposes all over the world. What this high demand for translation services has done is that it has pushed translators to work among themselves to create easier ways and processes in which one can get their documents translated without necessarily them being translated by human beings. This has led to the development of software, translation machines, and automated translation memories. In a world where accurate communication is important regardless of the language barriers, these translations tools have been able to carve a niche for themselves to help companies and individuals in fast-paced environments with their translation needs. Researchers have predicted that this will continue to be the case and that the need for translation services will continue to grow in leaps and bounds as years go by. With that said, mechanized translations can never exist on their own now or in the days to come. Localization services will always be in high demand from humans besides translations as it gives a chance to cater the translated content to the current cultural norms in which it’s being presented. It is the only way to convey the message accurately across cultures. What Is Translation? Translation is rendering words or text from one language into another. Translation is Important Because People Prefer Their Native Language. … Almost without exception, people respond better to the language they grew up speaking. To effectively sell to people, it’s not enough to speak a language that they understand (especially if their understanding is limited). Why Translation is Important in a World Where English is Everywhere? English is the third most widely spoken language in terms of native speakers, of which it has at least 330 million. But if you count the people who speak it as a second language, it’s the most popular language in the world. So why is translation so important? A Synopsis Of Translation One topic that can’t really be specified on how long it’s existed is exactly what you thought, translation has over time been the topic that has been debated on by scholars and historians, though it is widely accepted that translation pre-dates the bible. The Bible talks about different languages and giving insight into interactions between people of different languages. The need for translation has been apparent since the earliest days of human interaction, whether it be for emotional trade or survival purposes. Over time, the demand for translation services has really increased, and this is because different entities in life have been trying to expand in different regions with a different spoken language which has been promoted by translation so much that with the need of penetration to foreign markets, marketing material and business documents need to also be translated. What Is The Difference Between Translation And Adaptation (Case Study)

1K views · Feb 16, 2022 dubbingking.com

How Do Translation And Adaptation Differ? Translation is simply a literal translation of content from one language to another. Adaptation takes translation one step further and modifies the content to make it culturally appropriate and accurate. What Are The Aspects That Distinguish Adaptation From Translation? When communicating a message to a listener or reader whose mother tongue is not the same as our own, especially when that person does not even understand the language, we must use different ways or methods to get the message across as clearly as possible. While we can use gestures, signs, or noises in order to make ourselves understood, when communicating something written, we must turn to translators. One of the tools used in translation is adaptation. It is used in many cases, as cultural differences between different speakers can cause confusion that can sometimes be tricky to understand or simply prevent us from understanding each other. Adaptation is not to be confused with Localization, however, which is used when the target audience speaks a different variant of the same language, such as in the case of Latin America. When adapting a message, we are not translating it literally. This does not mean, however, that when adapting a message or idea we are being unfaithful to the original message, or that we are not doing our job well (translating). Simply, there are situations in which it is required. British scholar Peter Newmark defines Adaptation, taken from Vinay and Darbelnet, as, “The use of a recognized equivalent between two situations. It is a process of cultural equivalence: Dear Sir/Muy señor mío; yours faithfully/Le saluda atentamente.” Adaptations, also known as “Free Translations” are when the translator substitutes cultural realities or scenarios for which there is no reference in the target language. A simple example would be translating “Friday 13th” from English into Spanish. In this case, we would need to adapt the translation to the cultural reality of the Spanish-speaking world and translate it as “Martes 13” (Tuesday the 13th). Adaptations are equivalents and can be seen more clearly in the translations of TV shows or movies, where conversations or cultural references must be adapted for foreign audiences. When comparing translation and adaptation, we are comparing two ways of communicating a message. In many cases, it is impossible to translate a text without making an adaptation, as a “literal” translation of the message would cause a loss of all or part of the meaning for the target audience. It is important to know when to adapt a message when an expression might have a more appropriate equivalent for a given situation. This makes us better translation professionals. Increasingly, people are considering the translation of literary works as a form of adaptation and not strictly language translation. I know that when younger people think about translation as a career, they often imagine a specific, slender sliver of the translation services world: Literary translation. They see themselves sitting at an outdoor café, sipping a coffee and taking leisurely, cultured turns bringing a work of literary genius from one language into another – and, of course, being paid handsomely for the work. I’m not saying those opportunities don’t exist, but they are certainly rare, and the funny thing is most of the people daydreaming about them don’t think too hard about the deeper implications of that sort of translation work. Specifically, is it even translation? Or is it actually a form of adaptation? I have even heard the term “trandaption” tossed about in all seriousness. Many academics these days resist the idea that any literary work can be brought from one language to another in any pure sense, that the very act of bringing it across linguistic and cultural barriers results in inevitable changes to the work that can only be described as an adaptation, similar to when a novel is adapted into a screenplay or a stage play brought to the television screen. What Are Translation Techniques? Translation techniques are used when structural and conceptual elements of the source language can be transposed into the target language: Borrowing: taking words straight into another language, also known as ‘transfer’ Why Do We Need To Employ Different Translation Techniques? Translation techniques enable effective communication between people around the world. It is a courier for the transmission of knowledge, a protector of cultural heritage, and essential to the development of a global economy. Highly skilled translators are keys help practitioners develop those skills. When a professional translator sits down to work, he or she does not stop and think about the strategies to be employed for particular translation work. It comes spontaneously. But ask a translator to make a list of the translation techniques they use and they might be hard-pressed to describe these to an outsider. Nevertheless, I will pinpoint these techniques to help readers interested in translation to learn more about the many nuances of this interesting work that well deserves public awareness and attention. A translator considers many elements before the actual translation is done. There could be discrepancies in vocabulary and grammar in both languages that means literal translation is not possible. That is why these translation techniques are used to come up with an accurate translation. Broadly, there are two main translation types: direct and oblique, with sub-types under each one. It should be noted that translation techniques are different from translation methods. Translation methods are applied to the entire document. Translation technique, on the other hand, can vary within the same document, based on the particular verbal elements that require translation. What is Time Code A time code is a series of numbers generated in a controlled sequence by a timing system. In a video and other recorded media a time code can be added to a recording in order to facilitate logging, synchronization, file and searching, etc. The camera assistant will typically log the start and end time codes of shorts, and the data generated will be sent on to the editorial department for use in referencing those shots. Time-codes, then, are numbers assigned to the frames – one per frame, to be precise. They are written as a variation of hours: minutes: seconds; frames, so that a user can tell immediately which frame in a video each time-code refers to. For example, the time-code 00:13:30:15 refers to: 00 hours, 13minutes, 30seconds, 15 frames Digital video is composed of frames that flash, very quickly, one after the other. If you’ve hit frame fast forward on your DVD player, you’ve seen that each time you do so, the image lands on the picture- essentially it’s landing on a single frame. When the video plays at a normal speed usually twenty-four or twenty-nine frames- per second, or flips your eye doesn’t see each individual frame, but rather it registers the succession as motion. This short – logging process was traditionally done by hand using pen and paper but is now typically done using short logging software running on a laptop computer that is connected to the time code generator or the camera itself. A professional video camera has the ability to generate ‘’time code’’. Definition Of Multimedia Translation Multimedia translation, also sometimes referred to as audiovisual translation, is a specialized branch of translation which deals with the transfer of multimodal and multimedia texts into another language and/or culture. This implies the use of a multimedia electronic system in the translation or in the transmission process. Overview Of Multimedia Translation Multimedia translation can be applied to various fields, including cinema, television, theater, advertisement, audiovisual and mobile device communication. Audiovisual text can be labeled as multi-modal when produced and interpreted by applying a variety of semiotic resources or ‘modes’. When various modes, such as language, image, music, color, and perspective are combined together in different forms of media, with the major role attributed to the screen, audiovisual text can be described as multimedia An example of this, called multi-modal transcription, is used in cinema. A film is broken down into frames, shots or phases. Every frame shot or phase is analyzed, looking for all the semiotic modalities operating within each one. The translation of multimedia creative works is a subject of academic research, a subtopic of translation studies. This interdisciplinary field draws from a wide range of theories, such as globalization and post-globalization theories, reception studies, relevance theory, social science and cultural studies, social psychology and deaf studies. What Is Audio-Visual Translation? Audiovisual translation (AVT) is the term used to refer to the transfer from one language to another of the verbal components contained in audiovisual works and products. Feature films, television programs, theatrical plays, musicals, opera, Web pages, and video games are just some examples of the vast array of audiovisual products available and that require translation. As the word suggests, audiovisuals are made to be both heard (audio) and seen (visual) simultaneously but they are primarily meant to be seen. There are ten types of audiovisual translation which can be united into two larger groups: revoicing and subtitling. Dubbing which is the most widely-spread type of revoicing is defined as a complete change of the original soundtrack into the soundtrack in the target language. Translation deciphers the meaning of the written word from one language to another. Translators must capture the content, style, and form of the original text accurately and precisely and then render it into the target language. The translator must read the text in the source language, decipher its meaning, then write, rewrite, and proofread the content in the target language to ensure the original meaning, style, and form are maintained. Depending on the context, the translator may need to apply thorough research and consultation techniques to the work at hand in order to widen his or her understanding of the subject. The final product should be polished, eloquently written, and completely free of error. Translators can take transcribed information and turn it into pristine prose in the language that you need. Translators may utilize technologies and reference materials to generate accurate, high-quality translations. A Brief Synopsis On Google Translate Google translate is one of the best innovations that Google has ever come up with that we didn’t know we needed until we could see what exactly it can do for us. I use google translate more times than not when communicating with my sister-in-law who speaks Portuguese alone and though it’s not the best form of translation, I’m grateful that it exists because it could have been worse. Did you know that you can use the Google Translate app to point your smartphone camera at any written text and translate the words on the text to any language of your choice? No? Then now you know and try it. I also didn’t believe it at first until I tried it and my mind was blown away, this is such a great deal because earlier on if one would want to get a certain text translated they would have to rewrite the whole text to get the translation which would always be a hustle. Below is a list of things you didn’t know, that google translate can do and I say this because as innovations on the smartphones continue getting bigger and better, google translate has no option but to get bigger and better. Almost 400 million people across the world use this free feature for their translations and whatnot, but have no clue how the feature has been upgraded to make things easier for them over the years. Translation is converting audio/text content from one language into another. The content might change from an audio format into a text format or a text format to a text format and lastly from audio to an audio format. Subtitling is the translation process that involves translating an audio format content into a text format content while Dubbing is translating one audio content into another audio content. The text to text translation is the common form of translation that many people know and are aware of. With that said, it is also very important to know the two dominant types of translations we have out here. We have machine translators and human translators. Machine translators – Normally referred to as MT, this is a sub-field of computational linguistics that investigates the use of software to translate text or speech from one language to another. They usually work by using computer software to translate a source language into a target language. There are different types of machine translators namely, Statistical machine translation, Rule-based translation, Hybrid translation, and Neural translation. We will look further into these types in another article. Human translators – Normally referred to as HT, these are individuals who take up translation works which entail translation audio or text content from one language to another. They are the opposite of machine translators. This kind of translation relies purely on human intelligence and emotions to convert one way of saying things into another without changing the context of the original statement. It is the main form of translation that offers perfectly accurate translations. There are so many types of human translators that are divided across different fields. I will talk more about them in another article. From the sound of it, people might conclude that text to text format translation is the easiest form of translation and that all you need to know is the source and target language. To some extent, it is true because all translators must have a solid understanding of the languages they are working with. A lot of clients prefer working with Native speakers because they at least understand how languages are affected by their cultural, linguistic, and technical aspects. These three factors usually affect how a language is translated into another language. An example would be when a translator factors in the cultural aspect of the language they translate to, they avoid offending their target market by using words that mean a totally different thing when translated into another language and so on and so forth. You can only know this if you have a deep understanding of the languages you are working with as a translator. Many people might think this is a natural flowing process but the truth of the matter is that it is not. Translators are usually faced with challenges from time to time. How a translator handles these challenges determines how good and professional they are. Translation is difficult, a lot of Common challenges in translation include knowing about a variety of features such as the language structure which differs between languages. For example, a simple English sentence has a subject, a verb, and an object, such as ‘She eats chicken.’ However, not all languages share this structure, so the Farsi language has the subject first, followed by a verb and then lastly the object. In Arabic, subject pronouns become a part of the verb. Because of these differences’ translators have to frequently add, rearrange, or remove words to communicate effectively in the targeted language. A lot of business owners have this fascinating notion that getting three-quarters of their issues internally solved is way cheaper than having them outsourced. I have always felt that this is a flawed notion, and the opposite is actually true. Outsourcing certain services, is more often than not, more beneficial than solving them internally. In this article, we will look at why it is important to outsource translation work to professional translation service providers. Written By: Winny Moraa Obiso Online Article: https://dubbingking.com/benefits-of-working-with-a-professional-translation-service-provider/ Translation has become a fundamental service, sought after by many businesses, especially in this era of globalization. It is the process that involves transforming written, audio, and video files from one language into another to offer inclusivity, to the different languages of the world. There are different ways in which one can get their translation needs satisfied, either by hiring translators to do translations internally or by outsourcing it to a translation service provider. The difference between the two is clear. Hiring internally means you won’t be hiring professionals, but rather, people who claim to be good translators, only because they understand the target and source languages. Understanding these languages is great, however, it is not enough to make someone a professional translator. On the other hand, translation service providers work with professional translators, who are extensively skilled. They have many years of experience and know exactly what they are doing.

Globalization is a reality for both small and large businesses because the growth markets are in Asia, Latin America and, increasingly, Africa. Strategic planning must include options for growing market share overseas, which means creating new market segments and not making assumptions on customer preferences and buying patterns based on North American customers. Businesses can use localization and translation to become effective global operations. In this article, we will look at some challenges that translators go through or have to overcome when translating from one language to another. Just like in any other line of work, translators have their fair share of challenges that most people do not understand about. I hear many people say that translation must be one of the easiest jobs to do because as long as you understand the languages you have to work with then it’s as easy as ABC when working on them, not knowing that translation entails so much more than just an understanding of languages. If you are not a translator nor ever worked on a translation job, then you need to understand that translation is so much more than just being bilingual, it is all about interpretation and being able to transcribe a message suitably, according to its purpose and be able to make it make sense to an audience without compromising on the original meaning and context. It entails being able to include and take into consideration the language, social and cultural aspects. With that being said it needs a very talented, skill full, professional with years experience to tackle a translation project and deliver it successfully and accurately. Also, it’s good to note that even being a professional is not enough because chances are you will meet hurdles along the way as you work along with a project and that’s what we will look at. We may define translation as the conversion of one language to another. In the translation process, editing is an important aspect. Many people do entry-level editing throughout their lives when writing reports, papers, articles, emails, etc. A refined editor makes the difference in readability, style, and quality within translated documents. Even the best translators don’t catch every error within their translated documents, which explains why proofreaders and editors are needed in the translation process. In case a company needs translation information or any document, an expert translation editor will significantly improve the production of a polished translation. I have met many people in life who always think being a translator must be one of the easiest jobs there is in the world when in reality it’s really not. I have connections with a lot of translators, and I can’t tell you how they complain about the different challenges they go through. Just like in any line of work, there is always one main factor that makes working there a little harder than usual. The thing about translation is that accuracy is key and there is nothing like word-to-word translation because that only messes up with the context of a document. With companies growing and expanding their services to different parts of the world they need for translation services has grown immensely and companies need their documents translated into different languages to cater to the different countries. As much as most of us cannot understand what goes into the process of translation, we at least know that translation is the changing of content from one language into another. If though it doesn’t sound as complex as the description is, it is a very complex process that needs one to be professional and keen when doing translation works. The main thing that we cannot notice though is that in most languages, if not all, is that direct word-to-correlation is not present in languages. Rather, the manner by which people express themselves and the rules of grammar are different among cultures. A translator has to understand the subtleties of meaning and the nuances in a language. Words in one language may have several meanings and connotations in another language; therefore, a translator has to choose carefully the words to use so as not to slant the message of the translation. So many people seeking translation services always prefer to work with human translators as compared to machine/software translators. There are about 7000 languages in the world today and this might not an absolute number because of how human beings interact we keep on coming up with different languages and thus adding it up to the existing ones. Different communities have different languages and dialects, which adds to the diverse dynamics that make up a language. I recently wrote an article on why subtitlers are the unsung heroes of cinematography, what it is they do, and what their prowess entails. I thought to myself well I have also written a lot about the art of translation, but I have never really written about the people who do all these translation works that we seem to always enjoy, and who have also helped in bringing the world together, by manipulating and availing different language content to all of us. In this article, we look at who a translator is, what it is they really do, and their purpose in the world today. One thing everyone should be able to note is that there are three different translators in the world today. There are service providers that offer professional translators for hire, freelance translators, and machine translators. Service providers who offer translators for-hire are like owned businesses who have professional translators as employees, and so they offer outsourced business plans for anyone in need of translation services. A freelance translator is a professional translator who works at their own time and peril under no strict rules of an employer to offer translation services while machine translators are software that offer simple translation services. In this article, we won’t look at the machine translators rather than the other two. Large businesses and individuals are constantly looking for translators day in day out to use their services to expand their businesses. This only shows how important translators are and how their work ends up impacting businesses in a positive and great way. Translators have proven to be useful, resourceful, and sprightly in situations that are rather dull and boring. Did you know that with the rate at which you will not miss at least 5 professional translators in a group of 100 people? I bet you did not know that, but that is the reality of the matter. We will look at what being a translator entails and some important facts that usually surround the world of translation. You should note that just like how any other service provider or business entity has a set of rules that govern how they work is the same way translators do.
