Voice acting is a career just like any other that you would think of. For the longest time, voice acting was not a lucrative career where individuals could work in and live comfortably through it. In 2020 that has changed and I can tell you for sure that voice acting is a career that you can live comfortably doing. In the past, screenplay actors would be given an upper hand and get great compensation for their skills while voice actors were sidelined and getting poor compensations for their skills. I’m glad that all that changed and now voice actors are getting a fair share of what they deserve for their hard-earned skills. Voice acting is usually confused for a profession where having a good sound voicing is all you need to make a cut but I will tell you that this notion is far-fetched. Having a great sounding voice is helpful but if that is all you have, then this is not the career path for you. Being a voice actor requires one to have talent. A talent to manipulate their voices to pass a message while still evoking emotions and entertaining an audience. Most of their projects involve working in video games, TV shows, movies, commercials, and movie trailers. When is a dictation considered poor quality? In the transcription work, you will encounter some bad quality dictation. And what can you do when you receive a poor-quality audio file to transcribe? Poor-quality dictation includes background noise, muffled dictation, overlapping conversations, and speakers that are recorded at different volumes. Any background noises on audio can make it more difficult for the transcriptionist to hear what is being said and transcribe accurately. A bad audio recording may contain too many inaudibles to get a useful transcript. Ideally, all recordings that will need to be transcribed, including interviews, and focus groups, should be conducted in a quiet setting, without noises from traffic, ringing telephones, air conditioners, and heaters. However, recordings are often done in less than perfect conditions. When an interview has background noise or the microphone is not placed near the interviewees, the interviewer’s questions might be clear but the interviewees’ answers may not be. This is a common challenge when transcribing group discussions and other recordings involving multiple people. Language services come in two major components, translation and interpreting. Each one has several sub-branches, specific services to cater to different topics. One sub-branch under translation is transcription, which is one of the fastest-growing jobs in the United States. Transcription converts audio files into text. Audio files can be in MP3 or WAV formats while video file formats vary, from AVI, MP4, FLV, MOV or WMV. Transcriptions serve many purposes, from medical to legal or business. It can be used as evidence in a case trial or as a reference for voice recordings and translation. In transcription work, the ideal scenario is to have recordings where the audio is clear and audible and in the same language, even if there are multiple people in the recording. But that is not always the case. There will always be instances when the recordings are complicated. The actual transcription process is already difficult, but the level of difficulty rises higher when several languages are heard in one recording and people are speaking in a hurried and tense manner. Voice acting is a career that can earn one a living if well used. A voice is a precious weapon someone can use wisely or in the wrong way and ruin his/her life. It is therefore necessary to take care of that precious talent and make a living. Getting an agent depends on certain factors. While many beginning voice actors have heard of voice talent agents, one of the most common questions is “What will getting a voice talent agent ultimately do for my career?” An agent should act a part marketer, part manager. Their primary role is to promote their talent to prospective clients and help them find promising auditions and jobs. Getting agency representation doesn’t guarantee that you’ll land more work, but agents are generally closely connected to studios and ad agencies, who forward them exclusive audition opportunities. Demystifying Subtitles And Captions Many people do not understand that subtitles and captions are more times than not always classified in the same category, but for those who think, I’d like to inform you that these two are different things with different meanings and uses. What is the difference between subtitles and captions? Captions are transcriptions of dialogue that include audio cues like background noises and speaker identification. Subtitles make an assumption of the viewer being able to hear and provide dialogue text in the viewer’s native language or any other language in that matter. A great example would be if a video file is in Portuguese and an American would love to watch and understand what is being said, they would use English subtitles to understand it well. The Americans would not be the only ones with a need for English subtitles considering the fact that over 59 countries speak English as their national language and also almost half the world population also speaks English. This definitely opens up an opportunity for other countries to translate videos to English subtitles and widen the viewing audience. Subtitling in filmmaking has been a growing phenomenon that filmmakers should take advantage of and be able to translate their videos to English subtitles. When watching your favorite films with subtitles, do you ever stop and wonder who or what is behind them? I’m sure the answer most of you will have is no or rarely. In this article, we will look at the people who create the subtitles we enjoy and enable us to appreciate foreign films with foreign languages more. Subtitling is a film process that has grown in recent years. Being a film subtitler is a rather interesting profession that we rarely talk about. You might wonder why we call them unsung heroes, but it’s because they don’t get as much recognition as actors and film producers get, yet they also play a huge role in the completion of a film. As much as producers, directors, actors, and actresses get their accolades. We should not leave subtitles behind. To fully bring your film into the reality of fruition, as most of the people like to call it, you would have to have a budget for actors, researchers set and costume designers, location scouts and cinematographers and also subtitles if your plan is to have subtitles in your film. That shows important subtitlers are. Just like everybody else on a set, we also plan for them. You should note that as much as subtitlers come into the picture at the very last stage when the whole film process has ended, they still are as important as the rest of the cast members. It’s a collaborative process requiring an ongoing dialogue and support system from within to create a product consistent with the artistic vision. When a film goes to the last stage, which is usually subtitling, the subtitlers have the power to mess up and destroy what the film production team plus actors worked on. They need to remain in the context and come up with a perfectly contextual film with subtitles. This is where you must be very keen as a film producer to get a subtitler who versed in what he or she does and is a professional. If the subtitlers do their jobs well, they bring the filmmakers’ vision to whole nations of new viewers. If they sacrifice quality, the film could become a laughingstock. I already mentioned how everyone works hand-in-hand to make sure that the film comes out perfectly. That is not a privilege afforded to subtitlers because they work alone and under a tight schedule, which might between 24 – 48 hours if they are working with a great producer. It usually becomes hard to stay within context following the fact that they rarely work with the film director who is the person who directs how scenes on a movie should be. Subtitles are a “by the way” for many production houses, regardless of how their role might be super impactful when you are trying to push your film across the boarders. To most voice actors, pop filters are one of the most essential tools in their studio collection that they would nearly never work without one. It speaks about why most photographs of a voice-over talent at a microphone in a studio session have that big black circle that stands between the mic and the talent. But what is a pop filter, and why does it demand to be used? What is a pop filter? A pop filter, also known as a pop shield or pop screen, is a circle of nylon mesh or a thin metal that you attach to your microphone stand, positioned between the microphone and the sound source. The pop filter was invented for the existence of “plosives” — explosive consonants heard from words that start with “p” or “b” which is normally part of our natural speech. They are also sometimes mistakenly referred to as a microphone windscreen or windshield–a similar device that’s primarily used by location sound recordists, for reducing noise from the wind when recording outside. The wise artist doesn’t begin their masterpiece from scratch. An artist will often develop preliminary sketches and studies, and an author will develop outlines of the action they want their novel to follow. In the world of animated movies, the storyboard fulfills a similar purpose. The storyboard lays out the entire flow of the animated movie with a series of pencil sketches that serve as a definitive guide to the composition, action, and artistic elements in each scene. Once this storyboard is created, you can devote in-house and outsource animation resources towards creating your animated movie’s final form. But to begin animating before you know exactly what you want will be a fool’s errand that will inevitably fail, because you waste money and time with your animators and any outsource animation studios you’ve contracted with. Animation can be as detailed as Toy Story or as simple as an explainer video. Animation can provide clients a voice in the crowded market. Case Study Word on the film streets is that it’s better to use foreign language subtitles when watching foreign film productions as compared to using native language subtitles. The benefits of doing this always extend to learning foreign languages and being able to comprehend the meanings of the original film before the subtitle. A very good example would be seen where research was done in Portugal where many people could comprehend and easily process English sentences after watching English material with English subtitles than they were after watching English material with Portuguese subtitles. English-speaking students who were learning French had a slightly greater improvement in vocabulary recognition after watching French films using French subtitles, compared to students who watched the French films with English subtitles. The study also shows that the students enjoyed, connected and had fun watching the original material more. The Philippine college students who were learning English could not have any significant experience or improvement in their listening and comprehension skills after watching English videos using English subtitles compared to watching it with Pilipino subtitles. From the three examples above we can and precisely conclude that it’s highly preferable to use foreign-language subtitles as opposed to native language subtitles though the differences might not be big, it just shows that the former is more effective. It’s also good to note that one’s preference for what works well for them depends on what exactly is a foreign language to them and what is a native language. The study also shows that while most people highly benefit and have quality and better learning experiences from foreign-language subtitles, students who are just beginners might struggle with them. If you have only limited proficiency in your target language, it might be better for you to use subtitles in your native language first until you feel comfortable having or in the native language. I will further discuss other types of subtitles here so you can get a better understanding of what subtitles are being used in the film you might watch; they say knowledge is power so why don’t I empower you with this knowledge. There are two types of subtitles in the film industry, namely: – Reverse subtitles Dual subtitles These two types of subtitles referred to as viewing schemes are not commonly used, and that’s why most people might not know much about them. Translation service providers are steadily rising. Before you know it, they will be everywhere across the world. This is because everybody is in search of translation services. Whether it is a major corporation, or it’s an individual trying to learn a new language in 2020. Everyone needs translation services. In the past decade, research has shown that more and more software developers are attempting to develop machine translators to cope with this increasing demand for translation services. We keep on hearing now and again, “There is only so much that a human translator can do””. The main reason behind the popularity of these machine translators is their speed, and their cheaper cost, compared to the human translators. Despite all this, human translators remain to be an invaluable resource for many employers. We will look at what employers look for in a human translator. A lot of translators, myself included, knowing how challenging and harsh the translation job gets and how much we have to deal with before we can fully translate a film and still end up with the original context and original meaning. Being able to consider cultural and linguistical factors is where it gets hard, but we always have to make it work. It is very easy for a film to lose its original meaning and context when certain factors are not taken into consideration. When done well, film translation has the potential to attract the attention of critics and film technicians all over the world; but when poorly executed, film translation can make a comedy out of a serious drama. A single mistake or mistranslation might end up distorting the original message that the film was intended for. With that mentioned, we will look at some main aspects that make translation such a hard task and why they do this. I sure have faced some of these challenges, and I believe other translators have too. Before we get into the challenging aspects of film translation, I will introduce to you the two main processes in film translation so you can have a general understanding of what I am talking about before we get on with the matter at hand. There are two main known forms of film translation in the world today, and that is Dubbing and Subtitling. These two processes involve localization of films into local languages to expand the audience reach of different film works. The difference between the two is that one specializes in an audio format and the other specializes in a text format. Dubbing is the film process that deals with translation of the audio into different languages to localize to meet the expectations of a specific target market while subtitling is the film process that deals with creating translated texts at the bottom of a film screen to serve the same purpose as the dubbing process. Both processes have their challenges and benefits as they are, but in this article, we will look at general aspects that make it hard to work on these processes to perfection. By perfection I mean, being able to work on them and make sure that the finished product mirrors the sentiments and meanings of the original film. I feel like I have researched and studied film dubbing so widely that I can write this article without the need to refer to any write-up. I have also written a lot of articles on this topic that I can start calling myself a “scholar in film dubbing”. Last time, I wrote about the comparison of dubbing and subtitling and how both processes would fair in different scenarios, we ended up noticing that subtitled films were the most consistent in almost all the scenarios because they are mostly texted while dubbed films wouldn’t be the best option where there was an audio issue, noise or when one did not have ear/headphones to use. After that, I was compelled to write on some benefits and limitations that are associated with dubbing your films. Dubbing is the layering and synchronizing of a soundtrack of the complete film dialogue which is recorded by voice actors. It is a process that has grown extensively in film production houses while still competing with subtitled films. Both processes are film translation, so it is very common to get people choosing one over the other. Some countries traditionally use subtitles (Scandinavia, the Netherlands and Dutch-speaking Belgium) whereas others prefer dubbing (France, Spain, Germany, and Italy). The choice to use one over the other is highly dependent on a country’s cultural, ideological and linguistic particularities. In this article, we look at the different benefits and limitations of using or opting for dubbed films. I am very aware that not everyone in the world always feels the need to research further about some different things they come across in life whereas I’m the people who are always hands-on google trying to get different information about everything and anything. This is such a weird way to start off an article but the reason I start the article this way is that I’m a firm believer that a person who is always inquisitive and curious about different things is a person who is truly and widely knowledgeable. We all know what subtitling is and why it’s a film process that is used widely and greatly. We also know how beneficial it is in a lot of different ways that I will mention as we go on in this article. Some people like me don’t really appreciate subtitles in films, but most people prefer watching films with subtitles rather than without. The process that is subtitling usually seems like a complex process, but you would be surprised to know that it is an easy process that has its normal difficulties just like any other film process. It only entails having a translator who is well versed in the rules and regulations of the process that are subtitling and a video editor who usually does the mounting of the subtitles on the screens. Many people would wonder, is subtitling an art or just a mere film process? Creating films is considered an art and any process that involves putting together different entities that are related to the film is also considered as an art. This maintains that the subtitling process is also considered as an art. Since it’s because of a collaborative effort of different artists to make it a reality, it is most definitely an art. If we can refer to the dubbing process and it falls under the same category as subtitling, then by all means so should subtitling. You may think, how can subtitling or translating a movie be considered as an art? To further expound on this aspect, it is very important to know that there are many challenges faced while doing it. It is an art that helps the movie reach all over the globe. If it wouldn’t have existed, then filmmakers would have no source of inspiration from movies of the other countries and other parts of the world. Translating is not the only goal of making subtitles, there are many other factors. Anything that ends up being an inspiration for something else is always referred to as an art because its impact is not felt through the mouth but by what it entails as a wholesome entity. Just like any other film process, subtitles have their own benefits and I will do the process a disservice if I don’t outline some of its benefits. I recently wrote an article on why subtitlers are the unsung heroes of cinematography, what it is they do, and what their prowess entails. I thought to myself well I have also written a lot about the art of translation, but I have never really written about the people who do all these translation works that we seem to always enjoy, and who have also helped in bringing the world together, by manipulating and availing different language content to all of us. In this article, we look at who a translator is, what it is they really do, and their purpose in the world today. One thing everyone should be able to note is that there are three different translators in the world today. There are service providers that offer professional translators for hire, freelance translators, and machine translators. Service providers who offer translators for-hire are like owned businesses who have professional translators as employees, and so they offer outsourced business plans for anyone in need of translation services. A freelance translator is a professional translator who works at their own time and peril under no strict rules of an employer to offer translation services while machine translators are software that offer simple translation services. In this article, we won’t look at the machine translators rather than the other two. Large businesses and individuals are constantly looking for translators day in day out to use their services to expand their businesses. This only shows how important translators are and how their work ends up impacting businesses in a positive and great way. Translators have proven to be useful, resourceful, and sprightly in situations that are rather dull and boring. Did you know that with the rate at which you will not miss at least 5 professional translators in a group of 100 people? I bet you did not know that, but that is the reality of the matter. We will look at what being a translator entails and some important facts that usually surround the world of translation. You should note that just like how any other service provider or business entity has a set of rules that govern how they work is the same way translators do. Why Should We Adapt Translations For Dubbing To Different Cultures? The process of film dubbing has grown to be a sort-after process in film production. While it is still unknown to many people, film production houses always prefer to use subtitles on their films as a way of localizing their content to cut across boards. After a lot of research, and I concluded, and it’s a reality that many people don’t enjoy reading subtitles when watching films and thus why film production houses have opted to use the dubbing process more compared to the subtitling one. Did you know that an audience wouldn’t be able to tell whether a film is original or dubbed depending on how well one does the dubbing? Before I got into the film dubbing industry, I constantly watched a lot of dubbed films without even knowing that I was interacting with dubbed content. That is how I knew this process was being executed impeccably. So how does one make sure that they have dubbed their film in the best way possible, you may ask? A lot of factors go into ensuring that you carry any dubbing process out to perfection and beyond. From ensuring that the text translation is on point, to make sure you get the best possible and suitable voice actors for all the actors on the original film to also making sure that they play their roles perfectly and to eventually making sure that the recorded (dubbed) voices synchronized with the original film perfectly. You can see that it’s a lot of steps that go into ensuring that a film perfectly dubbed. In this article, we will look at the translation bit. You might have an amazing group of voice actors, but if the translation from the original language to the target language bad, then the whole process will end up being useless. There are a lot of factors that come into play when one is looking to do a translation for a film. We all know that translation deals with languages and different languages have different cultural beliefs. This is one of the main things that translation focuses on. As a film producer, the main reason you would want to dub your film into a specific language is so you can create a fan base in that other language. Imagine ending up offending your target market because a certain translated scene did not sit well with their cultural beliefs or worse enough ended up being offensive? That is just one factor that one needs to look into when providing a translation for film dubbing, and we will look at them in-depth on this article. In this series, I set out to look at the different stages that sound engineers take in opening their studios. Just like everyone else, they have to start from somewhere. They don’t just wake up one day and they have a huge studio with all the expensive equipment. Stage one of this series, I wrote about the bedroom audio studio and in this article, we will look at stage two, which is the dedicated home studio. In the bedroom studio, we looked deeply at some important equipment that would come in handy, and help you make the most out of your bedroom studio. We noted that the most important equipment is a computer and other budget audio equipment that will work well with it. Compared to a bedroom studio, a dedicated home studio is bigger with more equipment. It serves the same purpose as a bedroom studio, but has a bigger space, with more valuable and useful equipment. There is no problem with a bedroom studio if you want to record in your bedroom studio forever, do so. However, if the plan is to own a state-of-the-art studio, the next step from a bedroom studio is to set up a dedicated home studio in your house. You can get a room and dedicate it to housing your home studio. After getting a specific room for your studio, be sure to get the following equipment. Some benefits of film localization. 1. What is film localization? It is very important to note that film localization is a fancier way of saying film translation. Localization as a normal word is making something local. If something is international and you localize it, then you have made it local to make it more applicable in a local set up or relatable to a local audience. So film localization is making a foreign film more local linguistically and culturally to make it relatable to a local audience through translation. Have you ever wondered what translators do when faced with hurdles during their translation works? Has it ever occurred to you that translators have strategies they use or use if ever they face any difficulties in their line of work? These are questions that you might not have thought of because you couldn’t care less about what the process of translation entails. I am 100% sure there is a person out there who doesn’t sleep at night because they are “steadily” thinking about this. In this article, we will look at some techniques that have been availed for translators to use when working with different languages. Ask any translators what some of these techniques are and they won’t know what to tell you, but do they use them? Yes. They use them because their line of work demands, but they might not even know that these techniques have an origin and a name, and that’s what we will outline here today. A client will scout for a translator, find them, make an offer to them and eventually end up giving them some documents to translate, it takes a very well knowledgeable and professional translator to know what to do when they come across difficulties because chances are; the client came to you because they needed your help, and they knew you would help them out. If you end up not knowing how to solve some challenges you face, then you will end up disappointing your client. Therefore, translators need to empower themselves with this knowledge as they grow their craft. With the emergence of the internet over the past decade, the world has become a global village with more people jumping on the bandwagon and being digital. There are over 7000 languages spoken in the world today, with English being a language spoken globally by a great number of individuals. This mere reason has led to the translation service, being sought after by many people who would love their content to cut across the boarders and accessed by more people who are not native speakers of their original languages. The demand for translation jobs is literally skyrocketing. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts, during the period 2012-2022, jobs in the translation industry will grow by 46 percent. Regardless of whether it’s a translation for personal or business purposes, the need is growing remarkably as days go by. With advancements in technology over the last several years, there are different options available to get your translation completed, including machine translation, which is a translation from computer software and also human translation, which is the translation by professional human translators. Machine translators have several advantages, however, today, we will look at the advantages and disadvantages of using human translators. The quality of software translation is still no match when compared to the translation by humans. Many people prefer using human translators compared to machine translators. We will look at why that is the case, and also why it might sometimes end up not be the best choice. Before we could even think of audio and video files, we consumed in the form of print (written form). There were no recording tools or cam coders to record and capture videos together with audios. As we move with time and new ways of disseminating information come up, it is good to note that there are people who would want to consume different information in a text format. Many people more so those who love reading prefer content in written form as compared to those people who love visual presentations and because of that prefer to get information through videos. There is the other category who prefers their content in the form of audio. Different strokes for different folks for sure. I am in the category of people who love consuming content is in video or audio format. The reason I prefer these two is that my concentration span is up to a bare minimum and having all my senses in use, usually helps me to be more alert unlike when I’m reading and end up dozing off. Someone else might disagree with that and say that reading up content helps them concentrate more and avoid the distractions that might come with watching videos or listening to audio. The three main ways that businesses used to relay informational content in 2020 are through the three forms that I have mentioned above and that is a podcast (audio), Video and Blogs (text format). We can consume this content can in all these three formats, but not all content is well and perfectly relayed to the public through all the formats. Different content works well if relayed in the form of a blog and others in the form of podcasts or videos. Video and audio formats usually work well with content that is artsier and includes illustrations for better comprehension, while blog formats are for information that is vast and needs a lot of explaining and attachment of links. When a business puts content out there, I believe it’s not just for the sake of it, but they have a target audience and a target in terms of engagement and achieving a certain aim. The particular content they re-purpose is to reach a wider target audience and be able to generate a passive income for the business. Transcription services are what a lot of businesses uses to repurpose the audio and video content into blog content.

Before you embark on a journey there is a specific “ritual” you do to ensure that you are 100% ready for your journey and the same thing usually happens before we do anything. The preparation process before the exact process begins is what ensures that you follow through and easily with your plans or whatever it is you would love to do. In this article, we will look at the steps everyone who has a plan of seeking translation services should be able to do and follow through before contacting a translator. Many people don’t really know that this is an important thing to do but trust me, it makes your work and that of the translators easy. I’m sure you have heard of the saying that goes, “Not preparing is preparing to fail” and this is very true because I can’t tell you how many things I have had to put on hold because I didn’t really prepare well before I embarked on them. Now I know better and my preparation ritual is very successful. I’m sure this is a very interesting topic, and that is the reason you might have clicked on it. I have come across a lot of articles speaking about the advantages and disadvantages of these two processes and I thought of comparing how these two will fair when put head to head in different scenarios. Since I have seen none of these articles anywhere, I thought it would be fun to look into that and see the outcomes. For those who might not know, these two are types of film translation processes. Dubbing is having the film audio translated into another language to localize the film to reach a wider audience. Subtitling is the process in which we do the translation of a film in text format known as subtitles, which are placed at the bottom of the screen to localize a film to reach a wider audience. With that said, we will jump into the different scenarios that I came up with: Research Done By - Winny Moraa Obiso Online Article - https://dubbingking.com/scenarios-to-opt-for-either-dubbed-or-subtitled-films/ Powerpoint Presentation - https://dubbingking.com/scenarios-to-opt-for-either-dubbed-or-subtitled-films-study-notes/

Depending on the project you want the voice recording for, there are a lot of things that one must consider when looking for voice artists. Looking for voice artists for a particular project is what we term as casting auditions. This is when you get a few talents showcasing their capabilities and capacity to deliver in front of casting directors or talent managers. Different production companies or clients usually have their own ways to carry out the auditions. There is really no standard way to do it, but there are ways that are more effective than others and that is what we will look at in this article. As the voice-acting industry grows, more ways to get the best voice actors are always being introduced and one of them is custom casting auditions. These are auditions that are held specifically for a particular project or a particular form of voice over. As I mentioned before, different production companies have a specific way of casting for their voice talents. Custom casting auditions are formulated to make the whole process easy and straight to the point. They help you get exactly what you are looking for, as a casting director. There are projects that need a very rigorous and hands-on voice talent casting, and in such a case getting one without a custom casting audition would be hard. A good example would be a company looking for specific voices for their advertising purposes to appeal to an international market, in this case, they must get voice artists with great resting tones, acting range and technical skill to do all the recordings. If you are looking for voice artists for a dubbing project, you must ensure you get voice actors who will bring out their character’s personalities in the best way. A pre-recorded sample may not have all the information these clients need to pick their voice artist, and that is where custom auditions come in handy. Custom auditions are also great for projects with multiple levels of casting review. It’s difficult to get stakeholders to approve foreign-language voice-over talents based on pre-recorded samples, especially since they may not extrapolate a final performance from them. A custom audition that allows stakeholders to hear their project’s text will often help to expedite this process. The audition sample can be used as a baseline for direction in the studio session. With that said, we will look at how you can create a specific custom audition for a big project. Keeping in mind that they can be costly, with these steps, you will get one that works well for you without straining your pockets. What Is Translation? Translation is the process in which we develop new language scripts from existing scripts in a different language. The scripts usually have to follow a specific structure in line with translation rules and regulations to ensure that they are accurate and meaningful. 4 Facts about Translation That Every Translator Will Love A lot of translation service providers have been cropping up in recent years which proves that translation services are a very important part of our economy and these are services that people are looking for, big cooperate companies are outsourcing and so on and so forth. With the internet making the world a global village and there being food and political crisis around the world countries are now communicating with each other more and documents of all kinds from, legal to religious, to health are being translated to serve different purposes all over the world. What this high demand for translation services has done is that it has pushed translators to work among themselves to create easier ways and processes in which one can get their documents translated without necessarily them being translated by human beings. This has led to the development of software, translation machines, and automated translation memories. In a world where accurate communication is important regardless of the language barriers, these translations tools have been able to carve a niche for themselves to help companies and individuals in fast-paced environments with their translation needs. Researchers have predicted that this will continue to be the case and that the need for translation services will continue to grow in leaps and bounds as years go by. With that said, mechanized translations can never exist on their own now or in the days to come. Localization services will always be in high demand from humans besides translations as it gives a chance to cater the translated content to the current cultural norms in which it’s being presented. It is the only way to convey the message accurately across cultures. What Is Localization? The Oxford English Dictionary defines localization as is making something local or restricting it to a particular place, which might be a country or a particular culture or belonging to a particular religious denomination In this article, we will look at language localization and the strategic stages or steps taken to achieve perfect localized content. With the world becoming a global village through the help of the internet, businesses, and companies out there expand and grow exceptionally. Regardless of whether you are a multinational company or just a small start-up, you have a global effect and push your business to a much bigger and higher level. With the help of a perfect set up website that includes all the nitty-gritty of your business in a well-organized manner, there is no reason your business wouldn’t have a wider reach globally. A website is the center of attention in your online presence and can be the instrument of manifesting your marketing strategies and make a worthwhile impact on them. If you are a business owner who has been living under a rock and does not understand what a website is, my advice to you is to get on that train and get yourself a website and wait to see how much it will boost your business locally and globally. To achieve this, your site should be visually attractive, contain great content, be user-friendly, functional, have a neat navigational design with qualitative graphics and images and apply the SEO principles. The first step is creating a general website and then localizing your website to fit the cultural aspects of any global country that you are targeting depending on what your business is about. What this does is that it speaks directly to the people in the country you are trying to reach and makes it easy for them to relate, which brings more sales to your business. Creating brand recognition and tapping into the global market used to be a real struggle for businesses, especially when you needed to reach different demographics with a respective knowledge of languages and cultural expectations. Today, this factor still determines the perception and judgment of customers–you want to receive it well. However, the digital world is always evolving and introducing new trends and ways that make a lot of work easier. People who work in the film industry and from time to time get to work on translation, localization and subtitling jobs should have been able to hear about subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, usually by its acronym SDH. Many people would wonder why there are specific subtitles for the deaf to an extent where they even have a name for them and would also wonder what might be so special about them. A Synopsis Of Translation One topic that can’t really be specified on how long it’s existed is exactly what you thought, translation has over time been the topic that has been debated on by scholars and historians, though it is widely accepted that translation pre-dates the bible. The Bible talks about different languages and giving insight into interactions between people of different languages. The need for translation has been apparent since the earliest days of human interaction, whether it be for emotional trade or survival purposes. Over time, the demand for translation services has really increased, and this is because different entities in life have been trying to expand in different regions with a different spoken language which has been promoted by translation so much that with the need of penetration to foreign markets, marketing material and business documents need to also be translated. A Synopsis On Language Translation If someone came to and asked you what you know about translation services, I’m sure most of you could only state what exactly they do and try to go further by explaining what translation is but they’re a lot of things you don’t know about translation services. A professional translation service provider is one that is able to offer translation for most “important” languages, if not all. I put importance in quotes because in this case important is relative. These service providers have a way of making you believe that you really need their services without even trying to think twice. The industry that offers translation services is important, and it has proved its importance from time and time again. This industry has proven to be useful, resourceful and sprightly in situations that are rather dull and boring. Translation services are all around you and chances are out of 100 people in a room you would not miss over 5 people who do translation professionally and others who have tried it but ended up not sticking through with it. This usually happens Translation is also not as easy as it’s sound and there are a lot of rules and regulations that go into ensuring that the translated content comes out as perfect as possible. Background Of Transcription In General When you hear the word transcription, depending on which industry you work in, then you might have a lot of different definitions for this word. Many people don’t have the idea that there are many types of transcription out there, but I will mention just three, which are mainly used from time to time. There is transcription in the medical industry, there is transcription in the film industry and last but not least there is transcription in the music industry. In this article, I will talk about transcription in the music industry, but I will also define the other forms of transcriptions so that at least you can have a rough idea. Difference Between Medical, Film And Music Transcription Transcription in the medical industry is part of the health sector that deals with rendering and editing doctor dictated reports, procedures, and notes in an electronic format to create script files. Transcription in the film industry is strictly known as the art of converting audio or video files into written text, and it can be in different formats. You can have them in a text format, word document, notes or whichever form of text you might be interested in. With that out of the way, we will delve deeper into the music form of transcription to understand it further and how it really works. Music transcription is defined as the art of exact note for note rendition of a piece of music written for one instrument and played on another for example notes written for a guitar can have a rendition and end up being played on a piano. Normally note for note transcriptions are usually rare because depending on what a speaker had said if there were speech pauses then the context is lost. A Brief Synopsis On Google Translate Google translate is one of the best innovations that Google has ever come up with that we didn’t know we needed until we could see what exactly it can do for us. I use google translate more times than not when communicating with my sister-in-law who speaks Portuguese alone and though it’s not the best form of translation, I’m grateful that it exists because it could have been worse. Did you know that you can use the Google Translate app to point your smartphone camera at any written text and translate the words on the text to any language of your choice? No? Then now you know and try it. I also didn’t believe it at first until I tried it and my mind was blown away, this is such a great deal because earlier on if one would want to get a certain text translated they would have to rewrite the whole text to get the translation which would always be a hustle. Below is a list of things you didn’t know, that google translate can do and I say this because as innovations on the smartphones continue getting bigger and better, google translate has no option but to get bigger and better. Almost 400 million people across the world use this free feature for their translations and whatnot, but have no clue how the feature has been upgraded to make things easier for them over the years. What is Animation Vocalization? Animation vocalization is the articulation of events of animals, plants, inanimate beings and it is an art in its own right. The animation sound does not only depend on sound capability. This work is done by the person who will perform the work and the actors forget that this is a voice actor. On the other hand, the animation can be up to the number of characters in the voice of a film. This shows that this process is not very easy. The ability to improvise with imagination as well as the technical knowledge and memorization ability of the person to do this is important for a successful voice-over. Animation voice actors, as we are familiar with the master artists, but you do not hear the name of the sound, but you may also like people very liked. The real thing is that the sound is integrated into the role and something fun comes out. In order to be able to animate animation, there is a need for both personal skills and technical equipment. There is a need for a studio environment to make vocalization. The character you use and the words you use will be available in writing. Between the studio and the figure to be spoken, a screen, a microphone, and headphones are used to help us more regularly. We hear the sound of what we’re doing by listening through this headset, adjusting the finish tones and following the script and voice. The trick is to provide a comfortable dubbing without pinching the abdominal muscles called the diaphragm. The film can be native or foreign, so it can be done by looking at the translation of a foreign animated voiceover film. In the script, the words cried, delighted, and the sound level and shape of your choice are determined by your choices. Sounds are not thought to be exactly the same, so the same sound and gestures to capture the nearest sound level are made by trying to remove the correct sound. On the one hand, you can follow these figures on the screen, while on the other hand, you control your own voice by the sound of the headphones. A little improvisation is a difference between languages. Because language is influenced by the environment and the structure of societies. The same words can be interpreted differently for these reasons. A Synopsis Of What Time Stamps Are I know that time and again you have heard of this word or even seen it somewhere on the internet and you probably never knew what it is and why it’s even being talked about right? Well, that is about to change because that is exactly what we will talk about today in this article. When watching a movie or listening to the audio, you always pause more times than not when you want to do something else and then come back and continue from that exact position. Can you imagine a life where the pause button was not available, and you either had to sit through a whole movie before you could move or keep on searching for the last scene you watched from the minute it was to the second and other times to the millisecond you left it at? That would daunt and stress you seriously. You might wonder why I came up with that scenario and it’s only because to some extent time stamps serve the same purpose that a pause button serves the difference is that when you pause it’s automatic that the video or audio player marks the last scenes and stays on it until you come back and unpause it whereas we insert timestamps so you don’t forget them. So time stamping, in a nutshell, is when we record different timings of different events and occasions to serve as a reminder of when and what time they happened. Most times the time-stamping many people are aware of is the one is in relation to audio and video files. We use time stamping in filming to create time codes for different scenes and when one wants to mark specific important scenes and speakers on the audio of the video that they would want to come back and look at. Today, though, we will look at the different ways in which we use timestamps in our day to day lives, from the lesser important instances to the most important instances. As technology continues to grow and permeate throughout every aspect of our lives, companies and individuals are relying more and more on automated solutions to solve their organizational and planning issues – no matter how large or important the scale of their projects. Especially for project managers working within a strict budget, these low-cost or free automated transcription tools offer an attractive alternative to professional transcription services that use full-time transcriptionists and highly accurate results. A recent wired article suggests that a combination of multiple automated services can significantly reduce the high error rates associated with automated transcription services, but they remain squarely in the double digits – a number unacceptable in the eyes of high-impact, high-importance industries and fields of study. Some professional services continue to struggle behind the leaders in professional transcription services, achieving error rates of 4% or greater, while others approach 99% accuracy with reliable consistency. That’s why it’s more important than ever to take a hard look at your organization’s method for transcribing crucial recordings, voicemails, and customer calls. Women like Hendren and Keyes spend many years mastering their craft as per the research. When she’s not teaching at Sound Camp, Hendren is a full-time sound engineer who works for venues in St. Louis and tours with bands. Hendren got her start by spending five years as a monitor engineer, which means she was in charge of what artists hear on stage. Her venue saw 150 to 175 shows a year, but she says she can count on one hand the number of female sound engineers she met during that time. “The guys who worked at the venue were great,” Hendren says of The Pageant in St. Louis. “But she always felt like she had to be a bit better at her job than they were. And then when she started talking to other women and had that feeling confirmed, it was like, ‘Okay, she was not imagining this. This was really taking her a lot more effort than it’s taking that guy over there.’” Hendren says she has lost work for being a woman; in one case, she was rejected for a job because the band’s wives were uncomfortable with a woman being on the bus. What Is The Difference Between Major and Minor Themes? A major theme is an idea that a writer repeats in his literary work, making it the most significant idea in the work. A minor theme, on the other hand, refers to an idea that appears in a work briefly, giving way to another minor theme. Can a theme be one word? As a literary device, theme is the central topic or idea explored in a text. Usually the theme of a work of literature can be stated in one word, such as “love” or “solitude.” The theme is generally not stated explicitly in the text, but instead is expressed through the characters’ actions, words, and thoughts. What is the common theme? A theme is the main idea, or message, of an essay, paragraph, or a book. The message may be about life, society, or human nature. Themes often explore timeless and universal ideas and may be implied rather than stated explicitly. … Authors often have common themes within several different stories they have written. Why Should You Soundproof a Room Meant For Audio Recording? A vocal booth, otherwise known as a recording booth or sound isolation booth, is an enclosed structure built to provide the best possible isolation in terms of sound transmission. Vocal booths are most commonly used to record vocals and solo instruments without the recording being compromised by any outside sounds. When setting up a home recording studio for music production, podcasting, or other kinds of audio work, there’s one important thing that you’ll need to prioritize: soundproofing. You can get the most expensive recording gear in the market and your audience would still be able to tell if you recorded in an environment that’s not conducive for working with sound. To get the most out of your equipment and produce only professional-quality audio, you’ll need to keep outside sounds from being heard and recorded. Fortunately, good sound blocking also means you can keep your noise in and avoid disturbing your neighbors. I’m talking about real dubbing, the process of providing films, video games, or other types of media with audio that’s different than the original language. Dubbing is a post-production process where the original language of recording is swapped with audio in a different language and is then mixed with the audio of the media to make it sound as natural as possible. There are many reasons to choose dubbing over, or in addition to, subtitling: Some markets simply require dubbing. In France, for example, dubbing film or video is the norm. Children’s programming is always dubbed for obvious reasons. Visual films or videos such as nature documentaries that are heavily narrated are usually dubbed. In some instances, both dubbing and subtitling are recommended, i.e. when a great deal of information is being communicated as in instructional videos for highly skilled procedures. Document accessibility is one of the more common uses for text-to-speech voice--over. Because TTS is a great tool for producing large amounts of voice audio in a short amount of time. But it’s also a relatively new tool, one that comes with a unique set of challenges, in particular for multimedia localization projects. Voice-to-text is a type of speech recognition program that converts spoken to written language. Voice-to-text was originally developed as an assistive technology for the hearing impaired. What Is The Difference Between Translation And Adaptation (Case Study)

How Do Translation And Adaptation Differ? Translation is simply a literal translation of content from one language to another. Adaptation takes translation one step further and modifies the content to make it culturally appropriate and accurate. What Are The Aspects That Distinguish Adaptation From Translation? When communicating a message to a listener or reader whose mother tongue is not the same as our own, especially when that person does not even understand the language, we must use different ways or methods to get the message across as clearly as possible. While we can use gestures, signs, or noises in order to make ourselves understood, when communicating something written, we must turn to translators. One of the tools used in translation is adaptation. It is used in many cases, as cultural differences between different speakers can cause confusion that can sometimes be tricky to understand or simply prevent us from understanding each other. Adaptation is not to be confused with Localization, however, which is used when the target audience speaks a different variant of the same language, such as in the case of Latin America. When adapting a message, we are not translating it literally. This does not mean, however, that when adapting a message or idea we are being unfaithful to the original message, or that we are not doing our job well (translating). Simply, there are situations in which it is required. British scholar Peter Newmark defines Adaptation, taken from Vinay and Darbelnet, as, “The use of a recognized equivalent between two situations. It is a process of cultural equivalence: Dear Sir/Muy señor mío; yours faithfully/Le saluda atentamente.” Adaptations, also known as “Free Translations” are when the translator substitutes cultural realities or scenarios for which there is no reference in the target language. A simple example would be translating “Friday 13th” from English into Spanish. In this case, we would need to adapt the translation to the cultural reality of the Spanish-speaking world and translate it as “Martes 13” (Tuesday the 13th). Adaptations are equivalents and can be seen more clearly in the translations of TV shows or movies, where conversations or cultural references must be adapted for foreign audiences. When comparing translation and adaptation, we are comparing two ways of communicating a message. In many cases, it is impossible to translate a text without making an adaptation, as a “literal” translation of the message would cause a loss of all or part of the meaning for the target audience. It is important to know when to adapt a message when an expression might have a more appropriate equivalent for a given situation. This makes us better translation professionals. Increasingly, people are considering the translation of literary works as a form of adaptation and not strictly language translation. I know that when younger people think about translation as a career, they often imagine a specific, slender sliver of the translation services world: Literary translation. They see themselves sitting at an outdoor café, sipping a coffee and taking leisurely, cultured turns bringing a work of literary genius from one language into another – and, of course, being paid handsomely for the work. I’m not saying those opportunities don’t exist, but they are certainly rare, and the funny thing is most of the people daydreaming about them don’t think too hard about the deeper implications of that sort of translation work. Specifically, is it even translation? Or is it actually a form of adaptation? I have even heard the term “trandaption” tossed about in all seriousness. Many academics these days resist the idea that any literary work can be brought from one language to another in any pure sense, that the very act of bringing it across linguistic and cultural barriers results in inevitable changes to the work that can only be described as an adaptation, similar to when a novel is adapted into a screenplay or a stage play brought to the television screen. There are as many ways to perform these steps as there are captioning companies, so what works for one company may not work for another. Some companies will do the first few steps simultaneously. They’ll type in one caption, clean it up, set the timing and positioning, and move on to the next one, all through the tape. Others will do these as discrete steps, even using different people. Others will not follow all steps as outlined. Taking into consideration the time to make the dub of the original master tape for the captioner to work from, all the steps in between, and the time to encode the final master tape, a 1-hour videotape can take anywhere from 8 to 20+ hours to caption. What Are Translation Techniques? Translation techniques are used when structural and conceptual elements of the source language can be transposed into the target language: Borrowing: taking words straight into another language, also known as ‘transfer’ Why Do We Need To Employ Different Translation Techniques? Translation techniques enable effective communication between people around the world. It is a courier for the transmission of knowledge, a protector of cultural heritage, and essential to the development of a global economy. Highly skilled translators are keys help practitioners develop those skills. When a professional translator sits down to work, he or she does not stop and think about the strategies to be employed for particular translation work. It comes spontaneously. But ask a translator to make a list of the translation techniques they use and they might be hard-pressed to describe these to an outsider. Nevertheless, I will pinpoint these techniques to help readers interested in translation to learn more about the many nuances of this interesting work that well deserves public awareness and attention. A translator considers many elements before the actual translation is done. There could be discrepancies in vocabulary and grammar in both languages that means literal translation is not possible. That is why these translation techniques are used to come up with an accurate translation. Broadly, there are two main translation types: direct and oblique, with sub-types under each one. It should be noted that translation techniques are different from translation methods. Translation methods are applied to the entire document. Translation technique, on the other hand, can vary within the same document, based on the particular verbal elements that require translation. What Is Audio Transcription? Transcription is the transfer of information contained in recorded audio and video files into text form. There are different types of transcription with the most common being the verbatim and intelligent transcription. Transcription services are relevant but not limited to the medical, academic, legal, religious and business field. What is General Transcription? General transcription entails listening to the audio file and typing the spoken words. This depends on the type of transcription required since, in verbatim transcription, the transcriptionist is required to type word by word including the non-verbal cues used by the speakers. General transcription differs slightly with the transcription required in the professional fields such as legal and medical fields. However, general transcription can be fully developed into a full-time career just like any other form of professional occupation. What is Time Code A time code is a series of numbers generated in a controlled sequence by a timing system. In a video and other recorded media a time code can be added to a recording in order to facilitate logging, synchronization, file and searching, etc. The camera assistant will typically log the start and end time codes of shorts, and the data generated will be sent on to the editorial department for use in referencing those shots. Time-codes, then, are numbers assigned to the frames – one per frame, to be precise. They are written as a variation of hours: minutes: seconds; frames, so that a user can tell immediately which frame in a video each time-code refers to. For example, the time-code 00:13:30:15 refers to: 00 hours, 13minutes, 30seconds, 15 frames Digital video is composed of frames that flash, very quickly, one after the other. If you’ve hit frame fast forward on your DVD player, you’ve seen that each time you do so, the image lands on the picture- essentially it’s landing on a single frame. When the video plays at a normal speed usually twenty-four or twenty-nine frames- per second, or flips your eye doesn’t see each individual frame, but rather it registers the succession as motion. This short – logging process was traditionally done by hand using pen and paper but is now typically done using short logging software running on a laptop computer that is connected to the time code generator or the camera itself. A professional video camera has the ability to generate ‘’time code’’. Major Differences Between Srt And WebVTT Subtitles Coding of WebVTT Versus .SRT (Difference In Syntax) For writers of subtitles, there are some fundamental differences in the way .srt and .vtt files need to be written in order to function properly. Some main differences include commas separating time fractions in .srt files being replaced by full stops in the .vtt format. WebVTT files can be slightly less time consuming for subtitle translators also as frame numbers do not need to be listed and correctly identified. This also can cut down on number of technical errors in the display of subtitles if numbers have been omitted. Information and References in Subtitles If using WebVTT files, non-displayed metadata can be specified and included within the files. This can include titles, authors, instructions, date information and more… In contrast, .srt files are designed to be basic and for display purposes only, where no metadata is able to be stored. Subtitle and Closed Caption Cue Settings Whether you need foreign subtitles, English subtitles or translation of subtitles, in WebVTT subtitles, the writer has the ability to position the cue within the .vtt file. This can be especially useful in cases where there is already writing, other subtitles or information displayed along the bottom section of your video, where the normal positioning of .srt subtitles may obstruct any information displayed there Subtitle Compatibility With extra functional capabilities, (or WebVTT) files are increasingly being used for subtitling purposes, especially for subtitle translation services. Though most browsers and programs are compatible with .vtt, some are not yet fully compatible. As .srt is the more widely used, traditional format, traditional format, you should be able to run .srt files regardless of the programme or browser Research Done By Everline Moragwa Achira Online Article - https://dubbingking.com/recording-and-mixing-tips-for-high-quality-audio-visual-output/ Powerpoint Presentation - https://dubbingking.com/srt-versus-webvtt-subtitles-comparison-study-notes/

6 Common Audio Recording Issues and Questions Expounded 1. Should vocals be mono or stereo? There may be a case for recording the great Satchmo in stereo, but otherwise, there is little point in recording a normal pop/rock/hip hop vocal in stereo. The mouth is effectively a point source and can be recorded as such. A single microphone, resulting in a mono recording, will do just fine 2. Stacking the Lead Vocal The amount of stacking can also change based on a particular part of the song. Typically, you stack more on the chorus than the verse – but stacking is common on both. … It will sound warmer and fuller but not quite as crispy or intimate as a well-mixed single lead performance 3. Do microphones record in stereo? Recording is a technique involving the use of two microphones to simultaneously record one instrument. The mono signals from each microphone are assigned to the left and right channels of a stereo track to create a sense of width in the recording. 4. Why does my voice sound bad when recorded? It’s because when you speak you hear your own voice in two different ways. The first is through vibrating sound waves hitting your eardrum, the way other people hear your voice. … Then when you hear a recording of your voice, it sounds distinctly higher 5. Why does my voice sound higher when recorded? When you speak, your vocal cords create sound waves that travel through the air to reach your inner ear. … This means that your voice usually sounds fuller and deeper to you than it really is. That’s why when you hear your voice on a recording, it usually sounds higher and weaker than you think it should 6. How do you remove white noise from audio? Just record some audio with Audacity and don’t say anything into your mic. Let it go for a couple of seconds (thirty at most) for best results. Once you have your white noise recorded, select it using your mouse. Then go into the “Effect” drop-down menu and look for the “Noise Removal” Sound is undoubtedly one of the most crucial parts of any and every film, which is responsible for enhancing the complete feel of the film. The audience is going to react following the kind of music that is added in a particular film sequence. Music helps in providing continuity so that any cut in the film looks normal and smooth. It is not easy to record or mix music for your films. But if you know music lessons and certain important and quick tips, it is going to be extremely easy for you Research Done By Everline Moragwa Achra Online Article: https://dubbingking.com/recording-and-mixing-tips-for-high-quality-audio-visual-output/ Powerpoint Presentation: https://dubbingking.com/recording-and-mixing-tips-for-high-quality-audio-visual-output-study-notes/

Definition Of Multimedia Translation Multimedia translation, also sometimes referred to as audiovisual translation, is a specialized branch of translation which deals with the transfer of multimodal and multimedia texts into another language and/or culture. This implies the use of a multimedia electronic system in the translation or in the transmission process. Overview Of Multimedia Translation Multimedia translation can be applied to various fields, including cinema, television, theater, advertisement, audiovisual and mobile device communication. Audiovisual text can be labeled as multi-modal when produced and interpreted by applying a variety of semiotic resources or ‘modes’. When various modes, such as language, image, music, color, and perspective are combined together in different forms of media, with the major role attributed to the screen, audiovisual text can be described as multimedia An example of this, called multi-modal transcription, is used in cinema. A film is broken down into frames, shots or phases. Every frame shot or phase is analyzed, looking for all the semiotic modalities operating within each one. The translation of multimedia creative works is a subject of academic research, a subtopic of translation studies. This interdisciplinary field draws from a wide range of theories, such as globalization and post-globalization theories, reception studies, relevance theory, social science and cultural studies, social psychology and deaf studies. What Is Audio-Visual Translation? Audiovisual translation (AVT) is the term used to refer to the transfer from one language to another of the verbal components contained in audiovisual works and products. Feature films, television programs, theatrical plays, musicals, opera, Web pages, and video games are just some examples of the vast array of audiovisual products available and that require translation. As the word suggests, audiovisuals are made to be both heard (audio) and seen (visual) simultaneously but they are primarily meant to be seen. There are ten types of audiovisual translation which can be united into two larger groups: revoicing and subtitling. Dubbing which is the most widely-spread type of revoicing is defined as a complete change of the original soundtrack into the soundtrack in the target language. Firstly, What is Dubbing? In sound recording, dubbing is the transfer or copying of previously recorded audio material from one medium to another of the same or a different type. It may be done with a machine designed for this purpose, or by connecting two different machines: one to playback and one to record the signal. Software is the program and other operating information used by a computer. Many digital audio workstations are designed especially for musicians. FL Studio and Apple Garage band are some great examples. Yet, other software is much more diverse. In fact, some software is better suited to mixing and editing audio for film and videos, recording and editing ADR and/or inserting sound effects and Foley in addition to working well for music composition and looping sounds. In this article, we’ll look at the best audio editing software for video editors. Then, at the end of the list, we’ll go over some key features to consider as you shop. You can do a lot of audio work directly in your video editing software, but when you need more specialized tools, a separate audio editing program can really come in handy. Moreover, if you’ve hit the limits of your built-in audio tools, it might be time to look for a more robust solution. To prepare for an audition, do your research on the project, who’s casting it, who’s creating it, the studio/network/theater behind it and who else has been cast. Read the script, make a choice, and bring it! As voice-over actors, our vocal cords regularly get a hearty workout. But the same may not be true for the rest of our bodies. Even if we consistently schedule exercise into our off-work hours, it may not be enough to combat the effects of spending our days in a recording booth. Whether we sit all day or stand while recording and then sit for editing, we’re still not moving around all that much. While a combination of sitting and standing can be better for you than prolonged bouts of just sitting, the effects of a largely inactive job can still add up. Dubbing used to be largely associated with low-budget martial arts films you’d find in the bargain bin of your local video shop – cheesy, badly put together and usually pretty terribly translated for good measure. These films, along with poorly dubbed spaghetti Westerns and South American soaps, gave rise to the term “too dubby”, which quickly became a derogatory expression, and the practice fell out of favor in the 1990s. But with the rise of global streaming services, dubbing (or localization as we now call it, to steer clear of those negative connotations) has been given a new lease of life. Netflix, Amazon and the rest want to captivate audiences all over the world and that’s a lot easier if you speak to them in their native language. It will exist for many years to come if only to service some of the top filmmakers on the planet who refuse to shoot digitally. But even still, there is no denying that digital can trump film in certain regards, especially from a practicality standpoint, and the quality level of digital cinema is now stronger than ever. Traditionally film editing has 3 distinct phases. You cut the picture. Then you cut & mix the sound. Then you “finish” by cutting the negative or doing an online edit. Nowadays plenty of that work is combined. Sometimes your edit is in fact at full resolution, so online isn’t strictly necessary. Sometimes your sound editing can be done with the same software you edited picture in, and by the same person. But other times you will need the special expertise of an audio editor and the special tools that only specialized audio software like Pro Tools can offer. So today I am likely to talk specifically concerning the steps you must go through to get ready a film for hand-off to an audio editor. Time-code is a reference number given to a specific point in time within a media file. They’re added to film/video in order to facilitate logging, file organizing, and make searching for specific elements more simple. Time-coded transcripts are written with time-codes, thus allowing the end-user to locate the desired audio or video within the source media instantly. Using time-codes saves money, time, and resources. For searching through long media files for keywords and phrases, this allows the user to identify the location of critical aspects in their media. It increases overall efficiency and allows audio & video producers and editors to improve their workflow. Time-codes for a video must be frame-accurate so adding the milliseconds are important. This element is commonly used for subtitles, and video captions but it has other uses as well. Transcriptionists and editors greatly benefit from these time-codes as it allows them to use particular scenarios more easily and accurately synchronize subtitles with each scene. The production sound mixer (also called the location sound mixer) is the senior-most sound position during pre-production and production. They serve as a sound recordist during filming, and are responsible for recording and balancing the audio effects on set. It’s easy to think of film and television productions as visual mediums, but there’s a significant amount of behind-the-scenes work that goes into an entirely different sensory experience: sound. Translation deciphers the meaning of the written word from one language to another. Translators must capture the content, style, and form of the original text accurately and precisely and then render it into the target language. The translator must read the text in the source language, decipher its meaning, then write, rewrite, and proofread the content in the target language to ensure the original meaning, style, and form are maintained. Depending on the context, the translator may need to apply thorough research and consultation techniques to the work at hand in order to widen his or her understanding of the subject. The final product should be polished, eloquently written, and completely free of error. Translators can take transcribed information and turn it into pristine prose in the language that you need. Translators may utilize technologies and reference materials to generate accurate, high-quality translations. Subtitling is the process of translating the spoken dialogue into written text on the screen. It is a type of audiovisual translation, with its own set of rules and guidelines. They can either be a form of written translation of a dialog in a foreign language, or a written rendering of the dialog in the same language, with or without added information to help viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing to follow the dialog or people who cannot understand the spoken dialogue or who have accent recognition problems. Good subtitles convey to the viewer as much of the experience of watching with sound as possible. The text needs to be readable, match the dialogue as closely as possible, be well-timed, and not obscure important parts of the video. Achieving all of this at the same time isn’t always possible, so the subtitler needs to make an editorial decision about the best balance. Voice-over, also known as off-camera or off-stage commentaries is a production process and technique where we incorporate a voice that is not part of the narrative in radio, television production, filmmaking, theater, or other presentations in form of a narration. What usually happens is, a voice-over artist or a specialist voice talent voices out a script on a recording instrument, sound engineers then synchronize this recording with either an already exiting voiceless video or a grid of motion pictures. Voice-over translation is an important aspect of sharing information with audiences around the globe. Depending on the original video, different styles of voice-over translation may be utilized. No matter which technique is used, voice-over translation offers clear benefits. Translation is converting audio/text content from one language into another. The content might change from an audio format into a text format or a text format to a text format and lastly from audio to an audio format. Subtitling is the translation process that involves translating an audio format content into a text format content while Dubbing is translating one audio content into another audio content. The text to text translation is the common form of translation that many people know and are aware of. With that said, it is also very important to know the two dominant types of translations we have out here. We have machine translators and human translators. Machine translators – Normally referred to as MT, this is a sub-field of computational linguistics that investigates the use of software to translate text or speech from one language to another. They usually work by using computer software to translate a source language into a target language. There are different types of machine translators namely, Statistical machine translation, Rule-based translation, Hybrid translation, and Neural translation. We will look further into these types in another article. Human translators – Normally referred to as HT, these are individuals who take up translation works which entail translation audio or text content from one language to another. They are the opposite of machine translators. This kind of translation relies purely on human intelligence and emotions to convert one way of saying things into another without changing the context of the original statement. It is the main form of translation that offers perfectly accurate translations. There are so many types of human translators that are divided across different fields. I will talk more about them in another article. From the sound of it, people might conclude that text to text format translation is the easiest form of translation and that all you need to know is the source and target language. To some extent, it is true because all translators must have a solid understanding of the languages they are working with. A lot of clients prefer working with Native speakers because they at least understand how languages are affected by their cultural, linguistic, and technical aspects. These three factors usually affect how a language is translated into another language. An example would be when a translator factors in the cultural aspect of the language they translate to, they avoid offending their target market by using words that mean a totally different thing when translated into another language and so on and so forth. You can only know this if you have a deep understanding of the languages you are working with as a translator. Many people might think this is a natural flowing process but the truth of the matter is that it is not. Translators are usually faced with challenges from time to time. How a translator handles these challenges determines how good and professional they are. Translation is difficult, a lot of Common challenges in translation include knowing about a variety of features such as the language structure which differs between languages. For example, a simple English sentence has a subject, a verb, and an object, such as ‘She eats chicken.’ However, not all languages share this structure, so the Farsi language has the subject first, followed by a verb and then lastly the object. In Arabic, subject pronouns become a part of the verb. Because of these differences’ translators have to frequently add, rearrange, or remove words to communicate effectively in the targeted language. A lot of business owners have this fascinating notion that getting three-quarters of their issues internally solved is way cheaper than having them outsourced. I have always felt that this is a flawed notion, and the opposite is actually true. Outsourcing certain services, is more often than not, more beneficial than solving them internally. In this article, we will look at why it is important to outsource translation work to professional translation service providers. Written By: Winny Moraa Obiso Online Article: https://dubbingking.com/benefits-of-working-with-a-professional-translation-service-provider/ Translation has become a fundamental service, sought after by many businesses, especially in this era of globalization. It is the process that involves transforming written, audio, and video files from one language into another to offer inclusivity, to the different languages of the world. There are different ways in which one can get their translation needs satisfied, either by hiring translators to do translations internally or by outsourcing it to a translation service provider. The difference between the two is clear. Hiring internally means you won’t be hiring professionals, but rather, people who claim to be good translators, only because they understand the target and source languages. Understanding these languages is great, however, it is not enough to make someone a professional translator. On the other hand, translation service providers work with professional translators, who are extensively skilled. They have many years of experience and know exactly what they are doing.

To achieve success as a self-producing voiceover artist, you need to be much more than a good recording engineer. Do you have a great voice? Maybe you’re not the world’s best singer, but you might still have a good speaking voice. Couple that with a home studio, and you could consider a sideline as a self-producing voiceover artist. Making money as a voiceover artist used to mean living in a big city, mailing out demos, and sitting in traffic in between auditions. If you plan to get your videos or audio recording dubbed, then read further on to understand the art of dubbing and voice recording and why people prefer them over subtitling. Dubbing has a very long history, beginning with the emergence of dubbed Hollywood movies in the early 1930s. People realized that to help their films reach a bigger audience, they needed something far more effective than subtitles, and they soon found the answer in voice dubbing. Dubbing was a major boost to the film industry back then because production houses could localize their films into different foreign languages like French, German, Portuguese, Spanish which made the distribution of their films easily accessible to countries where English wasn’t the main language being spoken. What localizing does, is that it allows a lot of content creators to diversify their content to reach different audiences and be able to spread their message worldwide. This is something a lot of artists have tapped into and honestly, it’s made a lot of difference in how people interact with different content on the internet which has made the world a global village where anyone can access anything. Voice dubbing helps you to reach international audiences with your content by translating your video into several languages. If perfectly and expertly done, it is very easy for an audience to completely forget the original version of the content because dubbing adds an element of authenticity by incorporating the nuances of the translated language. It is always advisable to use voice-over artists familiar with the foreign language you would like to dub your content to. They should be able to get the tonal range, diction and voice balance correctly so as not to remove the original meaning of the content. Below we will learn the process used when adding a newly recorded voice to a video and dubbing it into another language and learning more about how dubbing is now becoming a mainstream media trend in 2020. While some films might receive international recognition for subtitles, many audiences prefer hearing dialogue in their native language, which puts quality dubbing in high demand. Dubbing can also be used in a film’s original language. I have met many people in life who always think being a translator must be one of the easiest jobs there is in the world when in reality it’s really not. I have connections with a lot of translators, and I can’t tell you how they complain about the different challenges they go through. Just like in any line of work, there is always one main factor that makes working there a little harder than usual. The thing about translation is that accuracy is key and there is nothing like word-to-word translation because that only messes up with the context of a document. With companies growing and expanding their services to different parts of the world they need for translation services has grown immensely and companies need their documents translated into different languages to cater to the different countries. As much as most of us cannot understand what goes into the process of translation, we at least know that translation is the changing of content from one language into another. If though it doesn’t sound as complex as the description is, it is a very complex process that needs one to be professional and keen when doing translation works. The main thing that we cannot notice though is that in most languages, if not all, is that direct word-to-correlation is not present in languages. Rather, the manner by which people express themselves and the rules of grammar are different among cultures. A translator has to understand the subtleties of meaning and the nuances in a language. Words in one language may have several meanings and connotations in another language; therefore, a translator has to choose carefully the words to use so as not to slant the message of the translation. So many people seeking translation services always prefer to work with human translators as compared to machine/software translators. There are about 7000 languages in the world today and this might not an absolute number because of how human beings interact we keep on coming up with different languages and thus adding it up to the existing ones. Different communities have different languages and dialects, which adds to the diverse dynamics that make up a language. Complications in transcription A good transcriptionist is trained to expect complexities in transcription work. In transcription, timestamps are required to show the exact time when something is spoken. Not only the words spoken by the main speakers are transcribed. Almost everything within the recording is transcribed, including background noise, coughing, laughter, and other things that are heard or spoken in the background. Transcription covers every element that is captured in the recording, including the elements that make transcription difficult. Background noise includes strong wind, other people screaming or talking, sirens, or various traffic sounds. These are some elements that can compete with the voices of the main speakers that can make it harder for the transcription work to proceed faster. In most cases, the transcriptionist marks the audio parts with audible or inaudible if it is no longer possible to understand what is being said. Speakers using other languages also make transcription difficult. In a report or interview, for example, one language can be used by one person while another could be speaking in a different language and a translator is needed. If this is the case, different persons may be needed to transcribe the recording. Slang or strong accent is another element that complicates the transcribing process. Even if only one language is used, the accent of the speaker or the slang of the speaker can pose a challenge to the transcriptionist. It would be ideal if the speaker or speakers have a neutral vocabulary and accent. The volume and speed of the conversation also affect the process of transcription. Since the transcriptionist has to type the transcription, the faster the speaker speaks, the slower the transcription becomes since the transcriptionist has to rewind the recording several times to pick up all the audio. Even if the transcriber is a quick typist, it will take time to understand what’s being said and translate it into text. The volume of the speaker’s voice is also important. If it is very low and quiet, it could be hard to understand or pick up what is being said. Role of the transcriber In the early days of transcription service, the transcriber had to use shorthand to write everything that is heard in the recording, before cleaning it up and type it. Today, transcribers use computers, foot pedals, and professional transcribing applications. The audio or video file can be sent online through email or other file sharing applications. These make it easier for transcriptionists to download the file, load it into the professional software, and start typing the transcription. The transcriber will add the proper punctuation marks, new paragraphs, and full stops. A professional transcriber who uses touch-typing normally types about 75 words in one minute. Taking this as the basis, the industry standard to transcribe a 60-minute recorded video or audio is about 4 to 5 hours (minimum) of transcription work. Several factors may affect the speed of the transcription such as the speed of the conversation, the number of persons speaking in the recording, and its clarity, including the clarity of the speaking voice of the speakers. All the mentioned variables add time to the transcribing work. The client must understand that a professional transcriptionist cannot type at the normal typing speed because of the need to capture all the audible sounds in the audio or video file. On average, a speaker will speak at a speed that is four to five times faster than the typing speed of a transcriber. What Is The Difference Between Time-stamping, Time coding, And Spotting? Have you ever wondered how people can note where certain scenes are in a film or a movie, and by knowing I mean from the minute, second and millisecond? Then that is exactly what we will talk about today. We will look at what we call Time-stamping, time-coding, and spotting. These words hold a very important position in audio recordings and video files. They have a very specific role in subtitling, captioning and even dubbing on a larger scale. More times than not, if you are not a very keen person you might confuse Time stamping to Time coding and I think most times people confuse these two words because of their prefixes. Sporting confused with the two aforementioned terms. So you might ask yourself. What are these? Who are these? What do they do? How do they make subtitling easier? We will look at that in this article, and by the end, all of us will be on the same page. For starters, it is good to note that all these three words have similar processes but are critically different in so many ways. Time-stamping, Time coding, and spotting are processes that involve a certain method in which include timing information on any kind of transcription of a voice-over or any other sound elements in an audio or a video file. The information added, and the means you add the information makes them different. What Does Voice-Over Entail? It is important to have basic information on the topic at hand so you can understand why it is important for voice over artists to have certain qualities and how they come in handy in their line of work. If you don’t know already Voice-over, also known as off-camera or off-stage commentaries is a production process and technique were we incorporate a voice that is not part of the narrative in radio, television production, filmmaking, theater, or other presentations in form of a narration. What usually happens is, a voice-over artist or a specialist voice talent voices out a script on a recording instrument, sound engineers then synchronize this recording with either an already exiting voiceless video or a grid of motion pictures. The most common technique of voice-overs though is the synchronous dialogue one, where the voice-over is narrating the action that is taking place at the same time. Asynchronous dialogue, used in cinema, is usually pre-recorded and placed over the top of a film or video and commonly used in documentaries or news reports to explain information. There are different instances where one can use voice-overs, and this is from old messages, for motion pictures, and for announcements and information at events and tourist destinations. One can also use them during award ceremonies or during real-life events. It is very important to note that voice-overs are additions to pre-existing scripts, and one should not confuse it with replacing dialogue with a translated version, which is a process known as dubbing or re-voicing. In recent times we have seen how the demand for voice-over artists has grown in leaps and bounds. Every day, amateur and professional videographers, publishers, marketing agencies, and businesses publish thousands of hours of videos online. This results from how easy and inexpensive it is to create and distribute video content. Content that would have been on blogs for people to read is now being created as audio and video content and reaching a wider audience compared to the former. This means that more and more voice over artists are in demand because there is more work for them to engage in. It’s easier to have a lucrative career as a voice-over artist now than it was years back. Their demand is so high and they get handsomely compensated when in high demand. In this article, we will look at some challenges that translators go through or have to overcome when translating from one language to another. Just like in any other line of work, translators have their fair share of challenges that most people do not understand about. I hear many people say that translation must be one of the easiest jobs to do because as long as you understand the languages you have to work with then it’s as easy as ABC when working on them, not knowing that translation entails so much more than just an understanding of languages. If you are not a translator nor ever worked on a translation job, then you need to understand that translation is so much more than just being bilingual, it is all about interpretation and being able to transcribe a message suitably, according to its purpose and be able to make it make sense to an audience without compromising on the original meaning and context. It entails being able to include and take into consideration the language, social and cultural aspects. With that being said it needs a very talented, skill full, professional with years experience to tackle a translation project and deliver it successfully and accurately. Also, it’s good to note that even being a professional is not enough because chances are you will meet hurdles along the way as you work along with a project and that’s what we will look at. Captions and subtitles are crucial to a social media video strategy You’ve probably heard this before–about 85% of Facebook videos are watched without sound. That means that captioning and subtitling these videos is crucial to their success on this social media platform, and on just about any other. And social media content has its own set of unique video localization challenges. What to do? The Auditioning Process In Television and Film When you’re called in for an acting audition, the people present at the audition will include you, the casting director, and maybe a handful of other complete strangers. Some of these other people may be the producer, a camera operator (if they’re taping the auditions), the casting director’s bored friend or relative, a representative from the advertiser (in the case of a commercial audition), or a dance choreographer or musical director (in the case of a musical). No matter who is in the room, treat everyone in the room with respect. If someone looks like a sloppily dressed janitor, that person could actually be the producer, so play it safe and treat everyone with courtesy. By the time it’s your turn to audition, the casting director has probably seen hundreds of other people ahead of you, which means the casting director and anyone else in the room is likely to be tired, bored, and irritable. Make the director’s job easy and you increase your chances of having a successful audition. Make the job harder (by not being ready, talking too much, and so on) and you may seriously kill any chances of getting any role. After brief introductions (and make sure you keep them brief), someone may ask for your headshot and resume if you haven’t already handed one in. (Don’t be afraid to pass out multiple copies of your headshot or resume.) At some auditions, someone may take your picture with a digital camera, so the casting director can review all the people who auditioned that day. Be sure to smile and look your very best. If your picture looks nothing like your headshot, you need to get a new headshot. Every actor wants to book a job. A booking means you’ve been hired! What’s the audition process to getting booked? What to expect in an audition, and a few tips for actors Auditions really are a nerve-wracking and difficult experience for most actors, but they are a vital area of the job. Here’s how an audition process works and several tips on how best to perform your absolute best facing the casting director or producer. Getting the Audition For most roles, you (or your agent) must submit a photo and resume to whoever is casting the production. Occasionally, you could hear about an “open call” where anyone may arrive at the audition. These types of auditions are often called “cattle calls” because hundreds of people arrive and are quickly herded through. However, most auditions are invitation only. In case you are called for an audition, you’ll often receive “sides”, which are simply just a couple of pages of the script that you will be anticipated to read. In theater, you may also or instead be anticipated to really have a monologue and/or musical number prepared. Either way, after you have a script at hand, it’s time to get down to business.
